Why this place

Liaoning is the northeast's most populous province, and it holds the Qing dynasty's first capital at Shenyang along with the tombs, palaces and museums of the Manchu rise. Its coast — Dalian and Yingkou — is the best seaside in the north.

What to see

• Shenyang's Mukden Palace and the Zhaoling and Fuling tombs
• Dalian's colonial architecture, its trams and the Binhai coastal road
• The Great Wall at Jiumenkou and the old Ming city of Xingcheng
• The Yalu River at Dandong, on the border

What to eat

• Northeast stews and pickled cabbage; dumplings, cold noodles and barbecue
• Liaodong Bay seafood, and Dalian's own coastal cuisine

How to plan

Four or five days: Shenyang two, Dalian two, plus a day for Dandong or Xingcheng.

Best time

May–October; winter is long and very cold
