Why this place

Yingkou was opened as a treaty port in 1861 and the old foreign concession area still stands along the Liao River. It is a working port city — the outlet for much of Manchuria's grain and coal — and a good place to eat northern coastal seafood cheaply.

What to see

• The old treaty-port street with its 19th-century houses and customs buildings
• The Liao River estuary and wetland, a major stopping point for migrating birds
• Wang'er Mountain nearby, a coastal hill with temples and sea views

What to eat

• Liaodong Bay crab, prawns and clams
• Yingkou rice — the region's rice is well regarded in China
