Using this site

You may read, print and share this site for personal study and for teaching. You may quote or cite it with a link back to the page you took it from. You may not republish substantial parts of it as your own product, sell it, or feed it into a service that resells it, without written permission.

What is original here, and what is not

This matters, because different parts of the site have different origins and different licences.

• The explanations, translations, guides, journeys and editorial notes on this site are original work by the site's author.
• The classical Chinese texts are in the public domain; the editions used were taken from open, permissively licensed repositories.
• Photographs of places and monuments come from Wikimedia Commons and are used under public-domain or Creative Commons licences; each carries its own attribution, recorded in this site's source manifest.
• The stroke-order data used by the writing tool is derived from hanzi-writer-data, used under the ARPHIC Public License.
• The word lists are derived from openly licensed HSK vocabulary data.
• No third-party travel writing, encyclopedia text or commercial course material has been copied into this site.

What we do not promise

• This site is a study aid. It is not an accredited course, and nothing here guarantees an exam result, a visa, or admission to anything.
• Travel information — opening times, prices, transport, access rules, entry requirements — changes constantly and is given for orientation only. Always confirm with the official source before you travel.
• Statements about Chinese grammar, usage and exam standards are made in good faith and checked against sources, but languages and standards change; where the official standard and this site disagree, the official standard wins.
• The site is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, and may be unavailable at times.
