Why this place

Qufu is where Confucius was born, and the 'Three Confucian Sites' — his temple, the mansion of his descendants and the family cemetery — form the most important Confucian complex anywhere. The Kong lineage has been maintained continuously for 2,500 years, and the temple's halls and steles record imperial patronage across every dynasty.

What to see

• The Temple of Confucius — nine courtyards, with the Dacheng Hall and its carved dragon columns
• The Kong family mansion, where the descendants of Confucius lived until the twentieth century
• The Forest of Confucius (Kong Lin), the family cemetery, with 100,000 graves in wooded parkland
• The Apricot Platform, where Confucius is said to have taught

What to eat

• Confucian banquet cuisine — formal, refined Shandong cooking served at the local restaurants
• Shandong pancakes and the local mutton soup in Qufu and Jining

Practical tips

• Qufu is 20 minutes from Jining by high-speed rail and has its own station — arrive early, the temple fills up
