Why this place

Huangguoshu is 74 metres high and 81 metres wide, the largest waterfall in China and in Asia, and it is unusual in having a cave running behind the curtain of water that you can walk through. It is the centre of a cluster of falls and karst streams in the Anshun area.

What to see

• The main fall, and the walkways that take you to the base and behind the water
• Shuilian Cave, the cave behind the curtain, with windows looking out through the falling water
• The Doupotang and Luositan falls, in the same park and often quieter
• The Tianxingqiao stone forest and the karst streams nearby

What to eat

• Guizhou sour-and-spicy cooking; Anshun's 'guoshu' beef is named after the fall
• The local rice-flour dishes and the region's chilli pastes

How to plan

One day for the main falls and the surrounding sites.

Best time

June–October, when the river is full; the surrounding karst is green from April

• The walkways are wet from spray year-round — take a poncho and non-slip shoes
