Why this place

Macao, China is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, and it was a Portuguese settlement for over four hundred years — which is why its historic centre is a UNESCO site of Baroque churches, Chinese temples and Mediterranean squares. Its Macanese food is a genuine fusion that exists nowhere else.

• The Ruins of St Paul's, the Largo do Senado and the historic centre
• A-Ma Temple and the Mandarin's House
• Taipa and Coloane villages, with colonial houses and the old waterfront
• The Macao Museum and Monte Fort

What to eat

• Portuguese egg tarts, and the pork chop bun
• Macanese food: African chicken, minchi and the local curry dishes
• Almond cakes and the dried-meat shops of the old town

Two days, easily combined with Hong Kong, China or Zhuhai.
