A southern Fujian city with its own opera and its own dialect
Why this place
Zhangzhou sits at the southern end of Fujian, facing Guangdong, and it has its own Minnan dialect, its own opera form and a distinct food culture. It was one of the two great ports of the region and the source of many of the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia.
What to see
- The Nanshan Temple and the old city lanes of Xiangcheng
- Yunshui谣 (Yunshuiyao) and the tulou of Nanjing county, which are the most photogenic of the Fujian roundhouses
- The coastal volcano park at Zhangzhou, with basalt and beaches
What to eat
- Zhangzhou noodles (lu mian) and the local 'four-fruit soup'
- Bak kwa and other Minnan prepared meats
- Tropical fruit — bananas, pomelos and lychees
