Tea mountains at the edge of the south
Why this place
Xinyang is where Henan turns green — the Dabie Mountains rise south of the city and the region produces Xinyang Maojian, one of China's ten famous green teas. It is the only part of Henan with a genuinely southern landscape.
What to see
- The Xinyang tea gardens in the Dabie foothills, with picking in April
- Jigong Mountain, a hill station with old villas from the early twentieth century
- Nanwan Lake and the forested hills around it
What to eat
- Xinyang Maojian tea — light, with a strong aftertaste
- Xinyang is known for its braised fish and its southern-Henan rice dishes
