The cleanest seaside city in the north, and a naval history
Why this place
Weihai is a small, quiet coastal city at the tip of the Shandong peninsula, with some of the cleanest air and water in China. It was the base of the Beiyang Fleet, and the naval memorial and the 1895 battle sites are a sobering piece of modern history.
What to see
- Liugong Island — the Beiyang naval base, with the memorial and the old British-era buildings
- The coastal road and the beaches; Weihai's coastline is genuinely clean and pleasant
- Chengshantou, the easternmost point of the Shandong peninsula, where the sun rises first
What to eat
- Weihai seafood — sea cucumber, abalone and oysters from cold clean water
- Korean food, which is common here because of the proximity to the Korean peninsula
