Why this place

Pingtung is the southernmost county, and it is the tropical end of the island: beaches at Kenting, coral reefs, coconut palms and the lighthouse at Eluanbi standing at the southern tip. It also has the island's largest concentration of fishing ports.

What to see

• Kenting National Park — beaches, coral and the Eluanbi lighthouse at the island's southern tip
• Xiaoliuqiu island, for snorkelling with sea turtles
• The Donggang fishing port, and the Dapeng Bay lagoon
• The indigenous Paiwan and Rukai villages inland, and the old Wutai church

What to eat

• Donggang's 'tuna sashimi' — the town's bluefin auction is famous
• Tropical fruit: mangoes, wax apples and sugar cane; the local 'wan luan' pork trotters

October–April; the south stays warm all winter, and it is hot in summer
