Rice terraces, She minority villages and green mountains
Why this place
Lishui is the greenest, least-developed prefecture in Zhejiang — mountains, terraces and small villages. It is the home of the She minority, China's largest non-Han group in the southeast, and the terraces at Yunhe are among the most beautiful in China.
What to see
- Yunhe terraces — rice paddies carved up the hillside, best in May when flooded and in October when golden
- She minority villages with their own dress, songs and ancestor rituals
- Xiandu and the Nanming Mountains, and the old town of Songyang
What to eat
- She minority cooking — mountain herbs, wild vegetables and rice wine
- Lishui is known for its mushrooms, especially the black fungus
Best time
May–June for flooded terraces; September–October for the harvest
