Why this place

Nyingchi is in southeastern Tibet at lower altitude, and it is green where the rest of Tibet is dry: forests, rivers and peaches. It contains the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the deepest canyon in the world.

What to see

• The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon — the deepest canyon on earth, and Namcha Barwa at its end
• Basum Lake (Basong Co) and the Nyingchi forest country
• The peach blossom in late March and April, when the whole valley flowers
• The Lulang forest and the Tibetan villages of the Nyingchi valleys

What to eat

• Tibetan food plus the region's forest products: morels, pine mushrooms and wild greens
• Nyingchi peaches and apples, which are famous in Tibet
