The Qinghai Hainan — plateau, Qinghai Lake's south shore and a salt lake
Why this place
This Hainan is the Tibetan prefecture in Qinghai (not the island province). It takes in the southern shore of Qinghai Lake and the Chaka Salt Lake — the 'mirror of the sky', a shallow salt flat that reflects the sky and has become very popular with photographers.
What to see
- Chaka Salt Lake — the reflective salt flats, best at sunrise and sunset
- The southern shore of Qinghai Lake and the rapeseed in July
- The Gonghe grassland and the Tibetan pastoral country
What to eat
- Plateau food: yak, mutton, barley and butter tea
- Hainan is known for its 'gonghe' and its dried yak meat
