Why this place

Changji is the Hui autonomous prefecture around Urumqi, stretching from the Tian Shan's northern slopes into the Junggar desert. Its Tianchi lake and the Bogda peak are the classic excursion from Urumqi.

What to see

• Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) at the foot of Bogda Peak, with the Kazakh yurts around it
• The Nanshan grassland and the Kazakh herding villages
• The Beiting ancient city and the Silk Road garrison ruins in the north

What to eat

• Kazakh and Uyghur food: lamb, dairy, naan and milk tea
• Changji is known for its 'changji' melons and its handicrafts
