Why this place

Changhua is one of the oldest settlements on the island, and its Lukang old town preserves the streets and temples of the eighteenth-century port — including the Longshan Temple, regarded as the finest old temple in the Chinese-speaking world, with woodwork and stone carving from the Qing masters.

• The Baguashan Great Buddha, a 22-metre black statue on the hill above Changhua
• The old railway roundhouse and the Changhua station area
• The Fangyuan wetland and the west-coast mudflats

• Lukang is known for its 'oyster omelettes', 'shrimp balls' and its ox-tongue cakes
• Changhua's 'ba wan' meatballs and the local 'rou geng' soup
