Why this place

Baise is where the Baise Uprising took place in 1929, a major event in the Communist Party's early history, and it holds the site. In the surrounding karst, the Dashiwei sinkhole group is one of the largest in the world — enormous collapse pits with forests at the bottom.

• The Baise Uprising memorial and the old headquarters sites
• The Dashiwei karst sinkholes at Leye — huge, with primeval forest inside them
• The Zhuang villages and the mountain terraces of the surrounding counties

• Guangxi mountain food: bamboo, herbs and the local cured meats
• Baise is known for its mangoes — a huge crop in the hot valley
